Opening Shop

Vibrations from the freighter shook the docking port as it pulled back from the station. Scarlett stood silently watching the ship. The company of soldiers and their mates from Coolac were on their way back home. Scarlett wondered what could have happened if their specialists had been able to upgrade the station security. Greenleaf Skyplex wasn't a backwater port, it was likely the most advanced station in this area of the Rim. Yet a space station is just a machine. It is the people on board that makes it distinct. While imperfect by many alliance standards, and certainly those of Coolac, Greenleaf was a strong community, and Scarlett knew, together they could stand against whatever came their way.
Her hand moved over her Cortex, canceling out the contract with the Coolac Council and attempting to restructure what security personnel were still willing to work after this incident. Being threatened with dogs and told of their inferior standing by the Coolac Officers had not gone over well. Mercifully, security had never been able to fully unionize, and most of the regular officers were eager to keep their jobs, still faith in the administration, more specifically in her as the administrator had been shaken heavily by the last 48 hours. All is well that ends well, but his hadn't ended well. But it was ended.
The engines on the freighter pulsed as it jumped to full burn. As it vanished into a streak against the black, Scarlett quietly hoped for the best for the people of Coolac. She had extended an offer for any who wanted to remain on the station man or woman that they would be protected by the Alliance and given the freedom to live their lives as they chose. Most of the responses were rude, but Scarlett thought she saw a glimmer of hope in a few of their company. At least that's what she told herself. This whole fiasco was her failure. Failure to properly manage the on-boarding of the security personnel, failure to protect her own people, including Samantha Keller. That was a name that would remain with her forever. Her mistake had cost the woman her life, and an innocent child her parent. She still had not idea how to deal with that situation Stella Rose was staying with Moira until they could locate her biological father or find a suitable family for her on the Plex.
Removal of the Coolac was necessary and right, she knew that. But she had brought them to the station to begin with. Scarlett brushed her hand across the bulkhead of the docking bay. She promised herself she would never let outsiders harm her home again, no matter how good her intentions were. Coolac CDF, Alliance Purple Bellies or Axe Tong, it made no difference, fear and force were no way to keep the station. If the past years had proven anything is was these resilient people of the Plex needed a chance at peace and prosperity. She hoped worse days didn't lay ahead.
The lights on the bay dimmed as the last of the service personnel moved on to another freighter from Silverhold that was preparing to dock in bay 10. Scarlett slowly walked away from the view port lost in her thoughts. It had been a long day, one with no joy for anyone.
